As you drive south on U.S. 1,
you reach the end of the American mainland. Cross the bridge and drive through Key Largo (although you may want to leave time for conch fritters and cold beer at Alabama Jacks; peel an eye for Card Sound Road, off to the left). Keep heading south -- key, key, key -- and after an hour, if the traffic isn't too bad, you'll be getting near your destination. Watch carefully for the sign. It isn't very big, and it's pretty obscure. There's a parrot, crossed swords, and the crypic letters -- PPBBB. The sign points to the West -- the Gulf side of the Keys. You'll have about five seconds to see the sign and make the turn. We don't want any accidental tourists. The road soon becomes rutted sand and gravel. Don't worry; it's not too rutted (you may want to carry your Yugo in, however). Take this last quarter-mile slowly, both to spare your vehicle's alignment and to prepare yourself. There's a last bridge, barely twenty feet across, but now you've truly left behind the so-called real world. Welcome to Key Lime Key. You've come here for a Reason, even if you're not sure what the reason is yet. Maybe you've heard some Tales, stories about a group of Parrotheads who found a place to live the Life, no longer able to control their Carribbean soul, who've got too much Texas hidden deep in their hearts. Maybe after years of listening to Jimmy Buffett music, you felt the lure of the Keys, the call of the warm seas. Perhaps you discovered us online, chatting at #kwfl or reading the posts at alt.fan.jimmy-buffett (there are more than a few technogeeks in the KWFL). Maybe you want more than an annual concert, as much fun as that is. And the boat drinks seem to lack something on the mainland, don't they? Whatever your particular reason, whatever is sitting in your gut or tweaking your brain, you're welcome at Key Lime Key. Just pitch in with the work now and then, be ready to get silly, and give in to the spirit of the KWFL -- not to mention the Herrudura -- and you'll either find your reason or realize that, hey, it just doesn't matter, mon. |
