Barth Wysong posted this to alt.fan-travis-mcgee and I have to share it:

As I sit on the deck looking out into the darkness with a tall glass of Boodies, I play back old memories. No reason, just that introspecting, deep rooted need to check oneself. To see if there was anything missed. Any passed up opportunities, which, when found, usually doesn't matter in the scheme of things.
In my meanderings I came across something Meyer said. "Trav, you're an anachronism. With all the high tech stuff in the world, you persist in doing things the hard, brut force way."
Well maybe that's true, but I have never been comfortable in the 'normal' way of living. I am not a nine to five animal. I cannot swallow the myths which say that 9 to 5 is a Good Thing because that's the way nearly everybody else gets stuck.
But, to prove Meyer wrong, I decided to poke my head out a little in this Techno world. With the help of a friend I did just that. She showed me how to use her computer, and gave me some lessons on the electronic world called the Internet. After stumbling around I said that's it. This modern marvel brings the world to you. No longer do you have to deal with traffic, ticket offices, airplane food, turbulence, rain, bad breath, and sore feet. Nope. you can travel anywhere see anything, without actually coming into contact with another single human being. We have made the world a smaller place, ….and a lot less personal.
So much for my excursion into the 21st century. Give me my club back. Saber tooth tiger for supper tonight, honey?

Run out of JDM to read? Believe me, I sympathize. Try these Travis McGee books written by others:

And there's the new novel by Lori Stone, Black Squall, in which some think the lead character, Jean Pearson, is Travis' daughter.
